Conditions Shockwave Therapy Can Help With

Shockwave therapy is most effective for tendon pain that has continued for several weeks or months. These conditions often become persistent because the tendon struggles to repair itself. Shockwave therapy encourages new tissue growth and supports recovery.

  • Plantar fasciitis

  • Achilles tendinopathy

  • Patellar tendinopathy

  • Gluteal tendinopathy

  • Hamstring tendinopathy

  • Rotator cuff tendinopathy

  • Tennis elbow

  • Golfer’s elbow

  • Other long-standing tendon pain

How Shockwave Therapy Works

Shockwave therapy uses controlled acoustic pressure waves that travel into the tendon. These waves increase blood flow, encourage new tissue formation, and stimulate a healing response in the affected area.

Most people describe the sensation as firm but tolerable. The aim is to reduce pain and improve the function of the tendon over several weeks as the tissue repairs.

Success Rates and Evidence

Research reports good success rates for shockwave therapy in improving symptoms caused by chronic tendon injuries. Many people feel change within the first two sessions, although long-term improvement usually develops over several weeks as new tissue strengthens.

Shockwave therapy is supported by NICE guidance for several musculoskeletal conditions.

Shockwave Therapy FAQ

Does shockwave therapy hurt?

You may feel some discomfort during the treatment, although this usually settles once the session ends.

How many sessions will I need?

Latest research shows people respond well within three to five sessions.  In some chronic cases, further sessions may be recommended depending on progress and clinical assessment.

What patients commonly experience

Typical reactions:

  • soreness for 24–72 hours after treatment,

  • sometimes temporary flare-up,

  • gradual improvement over 6–12 weeks,

  • not usually instant relief

Many studies show the improvement curve continues after the sessions finish because tendon remodelling is slow.

Can I continue training or exercise?

This depends on the tendon involved. You will be advised during your appointment.

Is shockwave therapy safe?

Yes. It is a non-invasive treatment supported by clinical evidence.

Is it suitable for everyone?

Shockwave therapy is a safe, non-invasive option for many people, but it isn’t suitable for everyone. Before your treatment begins, you will always be fully assessed to ensure it’s right for you.

Contraindictions include:

• Pregnancy
• If you take blood-thinning medication or have a clotting disorder
• If you have a pacemaker or other implanted electronic device
• If you have a tumour or active infection at the treatment site
• If you have open wounds or skin breakdown where the treatment would be applied
• If you are under 18 (unless clinically agreed during assessment)

In addition, certain medical conditions or recent treatments (such as steroid injections into the area) may mean shockwave therapy is not recommended for you. That’s why we always carry out a thorough consultation and clinical assessment first.

If you have any questions or concerns, we’re happy to talk them through with you before booking.
